Universe is melodic death-doom from Eberswalde, the kind of record that wears its melancholy openly: weeping melodic leads draped over slow-to-mid-paced, downtuned weight, fronted by Birgit’s harsh and mournful vocal. It is a style with a long German and Scandinavian lineage, and Undrowned work it earnestly, more interested in melody and mood than in reinventing the form.

At its best it has a real heavy-hearted pull. “Crescent Moon” opens with clean frequency separation that lets the downtuned guitars and sub-bass sit distinct rather than smear, and “Neurosis” leans into a wide, reverberant atmosphere that gives the gloom some cinematic depth. When the leads soar over the crawl, the record finds the bittersweet sweet spot the genre lives for.

The hold-back is the master. Universe is mixed modern, clean but loud, and several tracks are compressed hard enough that the dynamics flatten and the cymbals turn a touch harsh up top, “Universe” and “Fall” both pushing into that airless modern loudness. The songs have the weight and the melody; a more dynamic master would let the heavy passages actually drop rather than sit at a constant ceiling. It is a production choice, not a songwriting flaw, but across nine tracks it tells.

Universe is a sincere, melodically rich slab of German melodic death-doom, and anyone tuned to the weeping-leads-over-crushing-riffs school will find plenty to sink into. Heard a little quieter, where the master stops fighting the dynamics, it lands exactly where it means to.
